Scotchbond is a self-etch primer and bond in one bottle. It’s a radiopaque universal adhesive that reduces X-ray misdiagnosis.
What’s good about it
After using Scotchbond for the past 18 months, I’ve noticed that postoperative sensitivity after a filling is much less compared to other bonds. Prior to using this product, I had some issues with post-op sensitivity. They were resolved once I switched to Scotchbond. When I do a filling, I just apply it, dry it and cure it. I also use it for crown cementation but it doesn’t require curing in that situation. I just dry it and place my cement. It bonds to ceramics without the need of ceramic primer.
Previously, I used a different brand of bond that was very difficult to dispense. The dispenser on Scotchbond is very good, giving one drop at a time. The lid mechanism closes on its own even if you don’t press it. This effectively stops the bond from drying out. I found that with other brands, it would dry out and I was faced with a messy process to clean out the dispenser to get a drop out.
What’s not so good
The drawback for this product is that they advise you to only use it with 3M cement and products. It’s not a problem for me because most of our composites are 3M brand but I also keep a bottle of Optibond on hand.
