This sectional matrix system is one of my favourite products as it is designed to follow the natural contours of the tooth. As a result, it’s perfect when dealing with interproximal lesions where one tooth contacts another.
What’s good about it?
The matrix band is light and thin, easily fitting between teeth. While other matrix band systems provide a straight-edge contour that leads to a poorer contact, the V3 band is curved so it creates a more natural contour. I find the V3 system functionally better to use and the end result more aesthetically pleasing.
I’m a relatively new graduate, and contemporary teachings of restorative techniques are that Tofflemire bands are more appropriate for amalgams. Modern bonded fillings, however, are very adaptable and allow for a natural contour. The wedge system that comes with the V3 is functional and easy to use. They are made of a flexible plastic material that has a nice feel when they slip in and secure the matrix. This is much better than wooden wedges that have water sorption.
For a variety of reasons, some patients request no anaesthetic when receiving treatment. I’m fully confident with the V3 matrix system when they refuse any type of pain management.
What’s not so good
It’s not a flawless system; it comes with a lot of pieces and is a bit fiddly. If I’m dealing with a patient who can’t keep their mouth open for long enough, have poor moisture control, or require 360 restorative work, I’ll go back to using a Tofflemire.
