I have used several different matrix systems in the past but when I started at Eden Dental a few months ago, I began using the Garrison Composi-Tight system. Even though it’s a little bulkier, I really like it.
What’s good about it
This system allows me to adequately contour the filling material, particularly when there is a large contact between two teeth. If you look at the older systems, it can often be very difficult to contour the matrix onto the adjacent tooth resulting in an open contact. The Garrison sectional matrix is very thin so you can get it nice and tight against the adjacent tooth.
The wedges that come with this system are fantastic. They’re bulky but sturdy, which gives them some extra toughness. The wedge sits well against the matrix to ensure there are no overhangs of the material.
The band and the wedges come out very easily. Occasionally, because the matrix is so thin, it can be very tight against the adjacent tooth and I need to use artery forceps to remove it.
This Garrison system has become my go-to for class two and three restorations. I use other matrix systems such as a Toffelmire in some situations but this is what I use most often.
What’s not so good
There’s only one way to place the band. Normally, the bands can face forwards or backwards towards the back of the mouth. With this system, the band has to face towards the midline of the mouth. It can be a little inconvenient in some restorative situations.
