Oral healthcare is essential for overall health, wellbeing and quality of life. However, while it plays a pivotal role in our general health, it also impacts the environment, contributing to CO2 emissions, single-use plastics, and waste generation. Now, more than ever, it is essential to deliver oral healthcare while ensuring it aligns with ethical and environmentally sustainable practices without compromising on quality or safety. This shift is critical to safeguard the healthcare of our present and future generations.

In a progressive step toward this goal, FDI World Dental Federation (FDI) has introduced a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) dedicated to Sustainability in Dentistry. The main objective of the course is to help dentists, dental teams, and students to understand the importance of sustainable practices and their own role in championing environmental responsibility within dentistry.

The comprehensive three-hour course focuses on three main learning outcomes:

  • Understanding the role of dentists and dental teams in environmental sustainability.
  • Understanding the impact of oral healthcare on the environment.
  • Utilising evidence-based dentistry to improve the oral health of patients in an environmentally conscious way.

The course concludes with a final assessment, offering participants the opportunity to formally pass the course and to receive a printable course certificate.
