The Medit i700 is a powerful intraoral scanner that’s fast, accurate and comfortable for patients. There is a wireless version available but I have a corded version. It can be connected directly to a PC without the need of power hubs or extra cables.
What’s good about it
I like that I don’t have to take nearly as many impressions anymore. This means we don’t have to keep coordinating with the lab to get a courier to pick things up. The i700 has made things neater and more environmentally friendly as there’s no waste and no plastics.
The results are very accurate, particularly for splints, crowns, inlays and implants. The head of the scanner is small and easy to manipulate around the mouth. It can take a few days to get used to it but once you do, it’s fast and efficient.
Patient response is really positive. They love seeing the results appear on the screen and it can be used to educate them about their procedure. Everything that comes back from the lab fits very well without the need for much adjustment.
What’s not so good
If there’s a gap larger than two teeth, the scanner tends to get lost. It can’t seem to pick up the gum between the two abutments. In these situations, I still take a silicon-based impression.
The manufacturer claims the tips are autoclaveable but it turns the mirror foggy over time. It’s impossible to take an accurate scan when this happens. I’ve purchased eight tips and use a cold steri and rotate them.
I would have also liked some hands-on training with the unit but the only things on offer were online. Despite these negatives, I’m happy I purchased the unit.
