The first generation of this composite resin was Z100 and that was my product of choice in the early 90s when released. I moved to Z250 when it came on the market around 20 years ago. It’s a fantastic all-round composite resin that can be used in a wide variety of situations.
What’s good about it
Z250 works equally well with posterior and anterior teeth. It has a certain level of translucency that allows it to aesthetically blend quite well. It’s almost a chameleon effect that picks up the hue of the surrounding tooth structure. The finished result polishes up very nicely and has a natural feel in the mouth.
Within our practice we have three or four different composite resins that the other dentists use. I’ve tried most of them but I always go back to Z250. It has a nice feel, it’s compactable and it’s not too sticky. It’s just a very user-friendly and reliable product. It also has the strength to provide long-lasting results.
Sometimes, reps visit the practice with samples of new products for us to try. Some of the dedicated posterior composites are quite good but none of them have the convenience and full mouth application of Z250. I have no plans to change any time soon.
What’s not so good
It’s not the strongest composite on the market but I have never had a posterior restoration failure. What it lacks in strength, it makes up for in consistency, ease of use, and aesthetic results.
