loupes with headlight

by Dr Connie Ju, Capstone Dental, Seven Hills, NSW

I purchased these loupes during my fifth year at uni. Not only did Orascoptic have the strongest marketing and biggest presence at university, they also have very helpful customer service representatives. That’s why I went with them.

What’s good about it

My loupes have 3X magnification and were very easy to adapt to using. I find that 3X suits me very well. It gives a fairly wide field of vision that would be missing with higher magnification. They are good all-rounder loupes for general dentistry, cleans, check-ups and fillings.

The loupes are worn like a pair of glasses and are very comfortable. They’re also sturdy and unlikely to be broken. Some dentists prefer flip-up loupes but the extra structure makes them quite a bit heavier. My loupes never require an adjustment and I just take them off if I want to do something else.

I added a LumaDent headlight that screws directly onto the loupes. It all fits together very nicely and feels like one piece of equipment. I tried using a battery with a short lead that can magnetically sit on your shoulder. Unfortunately, because the battery was smaller, it wouldn’t last for a full day of use. I upgraded to a larger battery that attaches to my belt and lasts for several days.

I use my loupes and headlight with every patient—I just can’t work without them. If there was ever a day I was without my loupes, I would have to go home and get them.

What’s not so good

Orascoptic loupes are a bit heavier than other brands but that’s what makes them so sturdy. The inclination of the lens is not adjustable which is not great for neck ergonomics.
