Surfil One

by Dr Parminder Bains, The Walk-In Dental Centre, Perth, WA

Surfil One is a tooth-coloured, one-step, self-adhesive composite hybrid. It’s an etchant, adhesive and restorative all-in-one. It provides high-quality restorations with speed and efficiency.

What’s good about it

It’s as easy to use as placing glass ionomer yet is as durable as a traditional composite. I find it ideal for my younger patients as I can work quickly and minimise their time in the chair. It’s also of great benefit with patients in compromised situations where moisture control may be difficult to maintain. Again, because I can work so quickly when using Surefil One, it’s perfect for patients who have difficulty in keeping their mouth open.

There is minimal post-operative sensitivity. I have removed traditional composites and replaced it with Surefil One with no reports of pain or sensitivity from patients. It works well with sectional and circumferential matrix systems. It also has an unlimited depth of curing and releases fluoride as an additional benefit.

Using Surefil One really does shorten clinical time which is also a great relief for phobic patients. When using this product, I can complete back-to-back class two restorations in about 40 minutes.

What’s not so good

Aesthetically, it’s not as good as traditional composite material. I tend to only use Surefil One with premolar and molar restorations.
