intraoral camera

I’ve been using Einstein intraoral cameras for the past 10 years, slowly working my way through the entire range. The latest model, Lumica, is a great camera and their best camera so far.

What’s good about it

I routinely use the Lumica for everything from examinations to mid-procedures to before-and-after photos. It’s a great way to show patients the condition of their mouth, particularly for things like failing margins, caries and cracks. It certainly helps with case acceptance. I can talk until I’m blue in the face, but it’s not until they see the problem that they decide to go ahead with treatment.

The camera and set-up is very convenient. It’s a wireless system so it can be used in any situation. The receiver has a USB port that can be plugged into any monitor; it doesn’t have to be run through a computer. Our camera has a feed to the computer so staff can save the images. We also have a TV in the ceiling and the images can be fed straight into that. The patient can watch the live feed while the camera is in their mouth.

We have five surgeries and use multiple cameras in our practice. Each camera has its own frequency so images are only seen in their respective surgeries. If a camera should fail, you can just switch the frequency on the receiver and move it to a different surgery.

The Einstein is also very good value, priced at between a third and a half of other intraoral cameras on the market.

What’s not so good

The camera has a small field of focus so it can’t be used for extraoral photos. While I find the resolution to be adequate, there are other cameras that offer higher quality images.
