Figures from the Department of Health show that in the 20-34 year age group, 55 per cent of dental practitioners are now female.<\/p><div class=\"bitem-article-desktop-720x300-in-text\" id=\"bitem-2576857011\"><!-- Bite 720x300 [async] -->\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\">if (!window.AdButler){(function(){var s = document.createElement(\"script\"); s.async = true; s.type = \"text\/javascript\";s.src = 'https:\/\/servedby.engagemedia.com.au\/app.js';var n = document.getElementsByTagName(\"script\")[0]; n.parentNode.insertBefore(s, n);}());}<\/script>\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\">\r\nvar AdButler = AdButler || {}; AdButler.ads = AdButler.ads || [];\r\nvar abkw = window.abkw || '';\r\nvar plc705185 = window.plc705185 || 0;\r\ndocument.write('<'+'div id=\"placement_705185_'+plc705185+'\"><\\\/'+'div>');\r\nAdButler.ads.push({handler: function(opt){ AdButler.register(165450, 705185, [720,300], 'placement_705185_'+opt.place, opt); }, opt: { place: plc705185++, keywords: abkw, domain: 'servedby.engagemedia.com.au', click:'CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER' }});\r\n<\/script><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis trend mirrors figures from the Australian Dental Association [ADA],\u201d says Dr Karin Alexander, a former president of the ADA. \u201cThere are now more female than male student members of the ADA and also more female practising members under the age of 40 years. This suggests that generationally, over time there will be more female dental practitioners in the future than males.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Science and sculpting<\/h2>\n<p>According to Dr Alexander, dentistry often appeals to women because it is a \u2018people\u2019 profession, that mixes both science and \u2018art\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdvancements in dental techniques, where we not only restore function but also focus on the aesthetics of teeth, have certainly contributed to dentistry\u2019s growing appeal,\u201d says\u00a0Dr Alexander.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the fine detail in some of the dental work I do,\u201d agrees Dr Clark. \u201cAnd I really enjoy that artistic side of the profession, where you get to shape and sculpt teeth. The intricacy and accuracy required is always challenging and rewarding.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Drawcards<\/h2>\n<p>Dentistry offers a variety of family-friendly work options that are a good fit for many women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dental profession perfectly suits the modern lives of mums engaged in the juggle of generating income and looking after kids and family,\u201d says Anna Maria Romero, principal dentist at The Tooth Place, with practices in Potts Point and Redfern in Sydney. \u201cDentistry is a very flexible occupation where you can work part time or full time and still earn a reasonably good wage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s all plain sailing\u2014women still need to work at getting the balance right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDentistry has given me the ability to choose the days I work and reserve weekends for family time but it can also be demanding, particularly if you are running a practice,\u201d says Michelle Ever Juan, practice principal at the Bondi Dentists surgery in Sydney. \u201cYou also need to somehow fit in continuing education to ensure you keep up with all the changes and new developments in our industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Obstacles<\/h2>\n<p>As more women are now studying dentistry, in the future, dental practices with all female practitioners will become more common.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen involved in dentistry are as capable as men,\u201d says Dr Romero, whose team includes three female dentists and one male. \u201cHowever, we can still sometimes feel that patients prefer a male practitioner. This is not a concern for myself and my practices, but I strongly believe that more work needs to be done in this area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition, the working hours of a female dentist normally drop once they start a family, which could also have an impact on the practice revenue and finance overall. It is not as simple as bringing a new dentist to compensate for your shorter working hours\u2014as patients often only want to see you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Dr Alexander, any scepticism about a woman\u2019s ability to do the job is usually quickly overcome by providing good treatment. \u201cI think this idea that male dentists are more skilled is far less common now compared with 20\u201330 years ago,\u201d Dr Alexander says. \u201cMy experience is that female dentists are generally now being treated as equal by patients and peers and by their male counterparts when they perform the same clinical tasks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, more women are engaging in the \u2018political\u2019 side of dentistry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are becoming involved in organisations like the ADA and the State Branches, on Committees and in Council and are making a very positive contribution,\u201d says Dr Alexander.<\/p>\n<h2>Sensibilities<\/h2>\n<p>Do women in dentistry bring a different sensibility to the job?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe they do,\u201d says Dr Ever Juan. \u201cWomen bring a friendliness, compassion, nurturing and consideration to their dental practice. It is not that male dentists don\u2019t have these traits, but we tend to raise women to show these gentle, caring qualities more openly and easily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This female touch stretches beyond developing supportive and patient-sensitive relationships. Female dentists may also pay a little more attention to the fine details of the practice to create a less clinical atmosphere. \u201cWe certainly try to create a calm and familiar environment for our patients to help manage their anxiety and make their visit as relaxing as possible,\u201d says Johanna Ramon, a dentist at The Tooth Place, who has over 12 years\u2019 experience. \u201cIn our practice we ensure that comfortable furniture, relaxing music, friendly greetings and personable conversations help make the patient feel welcomed and at ease.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Advantages<\/h2>\n<p>There are also less obvious dividends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFemale dentists are generally very good at verbal communication and explaining procedures,\u201d says Dr Alexander. \u201cIn fact, a great many patients now prefer females\u2014some even observe that we have smaller hands that help make dental procedures more comfortable!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The management stye of dental practices also appears to benefit from the approach of female practitioners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had dental reps comment that it is obvious when a practice is run by a woman because it has a more inclusive approach and relaxed atmosphere,\u201d says Dr Clark. \u201cBeing a good dentist is all about establishing relationships and I think women do that very effectively. It\u2019s very satisfying to build up rapport and trust with people that helps them improve their dental health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I get a huge buzz when I help cure someone of severe dental anxiety so that coming to the dentist is no longer something to fear.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More women than ever are joining the profession\u2014and changing it for the better, writes Stephanie Osfield When Leonie Clark was studying to become a dentist over 30 years ago, only a quarter of those enrolled in her course were women. \u201cSome lecturers referred to all the students as \u2018gentlemen\u2019 and a few largely ignored the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":11050,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[688],"tags":[93,3251],"class_list":{"0":"post-11049","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-your-world","8":"tag-female-dentists","9":"tag-women-in-the-dental-profession"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v25.9 (Yoast SEO v25.9) -
