}, opt: { place: plc705185++, keywords: abkw, domain: 'servedby.engagemedia.com.au', click:'CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER' }});\r\n<\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Working with Brazilian research partners, the team published their findings in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41533-021-00235-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">n<em>pj Primary Care Respiratory Medicine<\/em><\/a>, noting that\u00a0a lack of oral health advice relating to COPD, alongside poor oral hygiene practices and difficulties accessing free dental care, has worsened the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is a clear desire for greater integration between medical and dental services to promote preventative oral health,\u201d lead co-author&nbsp;Amber Swann said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis could be through developing educational programs or integrating oral health protocols into the primary care pathway for COPD patients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Co-lead&nbsp;Matthew Riley added:&nbsp;\u201cDentists felt that the problem lay with patients&nbsp;avoiding preventative care, whilst patients highlighted significant barriers to accessing oral healthcare. Our research indicates that incorporating preventative oral health into COPD management and expanded public dental services would help this group of vulnerable patients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>COPD is a long-term incapacitating respiratory condition\u2014the fourth leading cause of death worldwide. Caused mainly by smoking and exposure to air pollution, it is more common in low- and middle- income countries with disadvantaged populations most affected.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worsening of COPD\u00a0symptoms\u00a0is a common and costly complication, often associated with irreversible loss of lung function, hospitalisation and death. Up to half of such COPD \u2018flare-ups\u2019 may result from bacterial infections and recent evidence suggests a significant decrease in flare ups following periodontal (gum) treatment<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Brazil\u2019s universal healthcare system was introduced in 1988, oral health was a low priority and services were limited.
