The cost of poor oral health for older Australians has been put at more than $750 million per annum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in March 2021, several key dental and oral health recommendations were made in the RCACQS final report. At the time, ADA NSW welcomed the fact the Royal Commission had included in the draft Revised Aged Care Quality Standards new oral health requirements.&nbsp;<\/p><div class=\"bitem-article-desktop-720x300-in-text\" id=\"bitem-3375528442\"><!-- Bite 720x300 [async] -->\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\">if (!window.AdButler){(function(){var s = document.createElement(\"script\"); s.async = true; s.type = \"text\/javascript\";s.src = 'https:\/\/servedby.engagemedia.com.au\/app.js';var n = document.getElementsByTagName(\"script\")[0]; n.parentNode.insertBefore(s, n);}());}<\/script>\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\">\r\nvar AdButler = AdButler || {}; AdButler.ads = AdButler.ads || [];\r\nvar abkw = window.abkw || '';\r\nvar plc705185 = window.plc705185 || 0;\r\ndocument.write('<'+'div id=\"placement_705185_'+plc705185+'\"><\\\/'+'div>');\r\nAdButler.ads.push({handler: function(opt){ AdButler.register(165450, 705185, [720,300], 'placement_705185_'+opt.place, opt); }, opt: { place: plc705185++, keywords: abkw, domain: 'servedby.engagemedia.com.au', click:'CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER' }});\r\n<\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet very few recommendations have been implemented leaving an oral health care crisis in the making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn line with the Federal ADA 2024-25 Budget submission, we at ADA NSW want to see more government investment in oral health care.\u201d ADA NSW president Dr Dominic Aouad said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know this is offset by reductions in health care costs elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2024-25 budget submission made by the Federal ADA last month focuses on opportunities to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 create a senior dental benefits scheme,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 enhance the child dental benefits scheme,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 adjust public dental services for adults funding arrangements, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 consider the introduction of health savings accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to ensure the recommended revised standards from the royal commission findings in 2021 will lead to greater improvements in oral health including investment in seniors,\u201d Dr Aouad said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe government response to the royal commission report indicates that this recommendation was subject to further consideration by 2023. In its submissions to the royal commission, the ADA outlined the need for an SDBS and its benefits relative to other models.
