Restocq provides an answer. By Frank Leggett<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While many married dentists meet at work, it was a little different for Dr Stephan Kantharajah and Dr Namita Gupta. They met and bonded over their passion for creative expression and the arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStephan and I shared a love of performing,\u201d says Dr Gupta. \u201cWe were both involved with the Indian art scene where I danced Kathak and he played an Indian drum called a tabla. Six months later they married and two years down the track they opened their second practice, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newcastledentalcare.com.au\/dentist-in-newcastle\/?gad_source=1&amp;gbraid=0AAAAAC7t5IrhvzBDHKGLHWoF45ntVpTGL&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4-DksLfsiAMVsV4PAh1L4QSWEAAYASAAEgJ02_D_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Newcastle Dental Care<\/a>. They grew their businesses on the NSW Central Coast and in 2019, opened their third practice, <a href=\"https:\/\/dentalsanctuary.com.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dental Sanctuary<\/a>, in the Sydney suburb of Neutral Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-learning-to-delegate\">Learning to delegate<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It was difficult running three practices spread from Sydney to Gosford to Newcastle. \u201cWe soon realised our goal was systemisation within the business,\u201d says Dr Gupta. \u201cWe looked internally at our processes and how to empower staff to take responsibility to execute tasks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delegation of responsibility can be one of the hardest things for a business owner to do. The emotional, financial and physical investment they have in the practice can make it hard to let go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe made some mistakes,\u201d says Dr Kantharajah. \u201cBut when a mistake was made, we dove into that process and looked at what resources we had available. Of course, to successfully delegate responsibility requires the employment of outstanding dentists, nurses and support staff. We\u2018ve now reached a point where staff hiring is contained within each practice. Sometimes, I have to introduce myself to staff because they don\u2019t know who I am. Namita and I consider that a victory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Balance across the three practices\u2014collectively Apex Dental Group\u2014has been achieved and the successful businesses are now running smoothly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI work clinically three days a week,\u201d says Dr Kantharajah. \u201cNamita works clinically two days a month while also teaching for the implant diploma course at the University of Sydney. She also teaches at private institutions such as Perth\u2019s Implant Institute.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-restocking-with-restocq\">Restocking with Restocq<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While Drs Kantharajah and Gupta were putting their processes in place, there was one area in which they couldn\u2019t find a satisfactory solution. Ordering dental supplies was time-consuming and clunky. Generally, a key individual was responsible with no way to delegate to other staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe knew there had to be a better way,\u201d says Dr Gupta. \u201cWe developed a platform called <a href=\"https:\/\/restocq.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Restocq<\/a>, a centralised ordering system with all your suppliers on the one interface.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Restocq allows all team members to access the system with each person\u2019s permissions set at the appropriate level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>We\u2018ve exceeded 400 per cent growth over the past year. While burnout is a common problem with start-up founders, we\u2019re very protective of our time and prioritise the things that are important to us. <br><br><strong>Dr Namita Gupta, co-creator, Restocq<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf someone\u2019s away, the whole practice doesn\u2019t fall apart,\u201d says Dr Kantharajah. \u201cBudgets are pre-set. That\u2019s a huge psychological benefit because it influences how the team utilises materials and the amount of wastage. We\u2019ve found that when a practice starts using Restocq, they hit their KPI goals within a month or two.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two most expensive variable expenses within a practice are staff wages and the consumable spend. Restocq elegantly addresses both these issues. It saves staff time and moves individuals from heavy backend processes to the front end of the business where patient growth is driven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTypically, it\u2019s the practice manager, head nurse or the owner dentist responsible for procurement,\u201d says Dr Kantharajah. \u201cThey are the most expensive individuals within a practice. It\u2019s a complete waste for them to be bogged down ordering dental consumables.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Restocq permission management tool also neatly solves any delegation issues. A junior team member can be part of the process but they don\u2019t have the permission to send the order. The person in charge can check the order quickly and submit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRestocq saves time and money,\u201d says Dr Gupta. \u201cIf I had to pick one of those, saving time is more important because time is the one thing you cannot buy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-looking-forward\">Looking forward<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Between running three practices, teaching, and raising two children aged nine and 10, time management is essential for this couple. To throw a new subscription-based platform business into the mix is a whole new level of complexity\u2014but these married dentists make it work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re fortunate because we can test everything in our group before we launch it,\u201d says Dr Kantharajah. \u201cVersion 1.0 of Restocq just wasn\u2019t user-friendly. Namita pointed out that it needed to flow smoothly like Airtasker. The look on her face was priceless when I told her I went to school with Jonathan Lui, who founded Airtasker and soho.com.au.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They reached out to Lui who assisted them in developing Restocq and giving it a user-friendly marketplace feel. Lui was so impressed with the concept, he became one of their investors. Since launching in March 2022 at the Sydney ADX, Restocq has been a real success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2018ve exceeded 400 per cent growth over the past year,\u201d says Dr Gupta. \u201cWhile burnout is a common problem with start-up founders, we\u2019re very protective of our time and prioritise the things that are important to us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drs Kantharajah and Gupta are continually looking to the future.
