By Frank Leggett<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Lincoln Harris took a real hit when the COVID lockdowns began in 2020. Until then, his practice, <a href=\"https:\/\/harrisdentalboutique.com.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harris Dental Boutique<\/a>, was booming and his training company, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ripeglobal.com\/treatment-planning\/tag\/restoring-excellence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Restoring Excellence<\/a>, was undertaking in-person teaching in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Canada and the UK. By the end of 2019, there were plans to open multiple international Restoring Excellence offices. Today, it has a presence in 35 countries and has been such a success, Dr Harris has given up clinical work to focus entirely on running the business. He became full-time CEO in April 2024 and is presently preparing to immigrate to the USA. The opportunities for business expansion there are enormous. \u201cCalifornia has twice the number of dentists of Australia,\u201d says Dr Harris. \u201cMy intention is for RipeGlobal to be the global leader in dental career acceleration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ripe-for-success\">Ripe for success<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>RipeGlobal is based around collaborative learning through a cloud-based platform. Specifically designed and manufactured simulation kits can be shipped anywhere. The restorative curriculum features a two-year program taking students from zero to full mouth rehab, with additional courses in aligners and implants. Within a few months of launch, RipeGlobal sold $1 million worth of education.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The simulation kits allow dentists to train using their own chair, handpiece, burs and technology. As they use their own equipment in their own practice holding their usual posture, it\u2019s easier to transfer their skills to a real patient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe methods are so effective because you\u2019re learning in your own environment and using familiar ergonomics,\u201d says Dr Leonora Langstaff, an educator at RipeGlobal. \u201cThe level of detail we teach is the difference between good and excellent work. It\u2019s wonderful to see students gain the skills to manage complex multidisciplinary cases to a high level with beautiful outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each course also features high numbers of repetition\u201417 crown preps in one day is not unusual. All work is reviewed under high magnification and feedback presented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn-person learning is the gold standard for new procedures that a student has never undertaken,\u201d says Dr Harris. \u201cA supervisor must oversee for patient safety. RipeGlobal is about improving your current skills and the quality of your work. We\u2019ve found that simulation training\u2014with multiple repetitions of procedures in the student\u2019s own practice\u2014leads to faster learning. It allows for greater concentration with less distractions. Generally, people learn about 50 per cent faster on our platform.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Our simulation kits are being redesigned, reengineered and upgraded. It\u2019s going to be a huge improvement. We are completely focused on training, career acceleration, upskilling individual dentists and helping companies thrive and expand. <br><br><strong>Dr Lincoln Harris, founder, RipeGlobal<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Dominika Zaremba-Stronczak, a Polish dentist who moved to Australia in 2016, had passed her ADC exams for overseas dentists. However, she felt she was lacking confidence to work in an Australian environment. She completed RipeGlobal\u2019s two-year fellowship in restorative dentistry and the 12-month fellowship in implantology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt gave me confidence when communicating with my patients,\u201d she says. \u201cI was able to see the big picture and treatment plan complex cases. The online portal\u2019s global dental community is respectful of others, helpful and encouraging.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-new-way-of-learning\">New way of learning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Prospective trainers and educators with RipeGlobal are put through an extensive program to assess their suitability for collaborative cloud-based teaching. The methods are completely different to in-person teaching and not all can make the adjustment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRipeGlobal invited me to help mentor the next generation of dentists,\u201d says Dr Michael Frazis, the RipeGlobal director of education. \u201cDentistry is an isolating profession but discussing cases collaboratively with peers, facilitated by educators, makes you realise we all share similar issues. RipeGlobal\u2019s wholistic approach improves skills, competence and the mentality of the individual.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning, upskilling, gaining confidence and embracing communication skills invariably helps businesses improve their bottom line when they\u2019re in financial difficulty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI recently worked with a dentist who wasn\u2019t undertaking complex work,\u201d says Dr Harris. \u201cHis personal production was $45,000 a month. Upskilling in implants and crowns saw him gain the confidence to undertake these procedures regularly. His monthly production increased to $110,000.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-confidence-building\">Confidence building<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>RipeGlobal consults to group practices with up to 1500 dentists. The main reason these businesses get in contact with RipeGlobal is that their profitability is down. A dental business is unique in that profitability is highly dependent on the skill and confidence of the dentists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Dr Harris, early-stage dentists can increase their hourly rate up to 500 per cent by being well trained and confident. \u201cWe created software to help manage dentists. Owners track the performance of their dentists and decide who needs training. This helps manage all aspects of a dentist\u2019s career. RipeGlobal started as a training company but we\u2019ve evolved into a career-accelerating ecosystem with hardware, software, innovative training and a community at the centre.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-online-presence\">Online presence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Harris has long embraced online learning and when running Restoring Excellence, he created a Facebook group that has grown to become one of the largest dental Facebook groups in the world. This meant there could be criticism of work, but it also allowed dentist to learn from each other. Facebook and other social media are an effective way to share high-quality work and to interact with your colleagues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From his own experience and speaking with online colleagues, Dr Harris believes there\u2019s a case to be made that dentistry should be a surgical specialty of medicine where students are trained for 12 years, just like any other surgical specialist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA dental degree at Baltimore Dental College in 1837, the first dental school in the world, took three years,\u201d says Dr Harris. \u201cWith all the complexity and technological advances of the past 180 years, a dental degree is now four years long. Today, dentists know a smaller percentage of dentistry when they graduate than ever before. General dentists can now do soft tissue grafts, zygomatic implants, sinus lifts and orthodontics. New graduates are usually limited to fillings, check-ups, basic root canals and perio. It\u2019s very difficult for a business to make profit doing this stuff. If you want to be highly productive and profitable, you have to learn advanced procedures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-first-practice\">First practice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Harris has come a long way from his first practice, Harris Dental Boutique, in the small coastal town of Bargara. Located in Queensland\u2019s Bundaberg region, the practice still offers high-quality, multidisciplinary dentistry and attracts clients as far as 300 kilometres away. Prior to opening Harris Dental Boutique in 1998, he was employed by Queensland Health for two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter graduating from the University of Queensland in 1996 with first class honours, I spent 12 months in Roma and another 12 months in Bundaberg in order to repay my scholarship,\u201d he says. \u201cI had little support and the majority of my work was amalgams, extractions and acrylics. I had been trained in a variety of procedures but was never allowed to use those skills. It was quite soul destroying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was this experience that inspired Dr Harris to embrace and promote training and education services for dentists. His focus has always been to build a brand of high quality, no matter what the business. From its launch in early 2020, RipeGlobal has been destined for global expansion, helping companies manage every aspect of their dentists\u2019 careers while improving profitability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur simulation kits are being redesigned, reengineered and upgraded,\u201d says Dr Harris. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be a huge improvement.
