After treating over 12,000 cases and teaching countless dentists, I see how this perception has limited our profession. General dentists face a frustrating reality. Their patients want orthodontic treatment, but they\u2019ve been conditioned to believe it\u2019s beyond their scope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Orthodontics has historically maintained itself as a closed shop, creating artificial barriers that have nothing to do with clinical capability. We\u2019ve reached a point where general dentists are expected to simply refer cases and press \u2018approve\u2019 on aligner treatment plans without grasping the underlying concepts. This is no different from accepting SmileDirectClub\u2019s approach of letting someone else do the thinking. You wouldn\u2019t outsource your full-mouth rehab planning to a technician, so why delegate orthodontic planning to an AI?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What we need isn\u2019t more cookbook approaches or rigid protocols, as these fail in about 30% of cases. Instead, we need to master fundamental and foundational principles. I\u2019ve seen countless dentists transform their approach once they grasp concepts like constraints, references, consistent and inconsistent force systems, proper canine positioning, and Class I relationships. One of my graduates in New Zealand started treating 90 cases in his first two years simply because he understood the \u2018why\u2019 behind every decision. That\u2019s what proper orthodontic education delivers \u2013 not just the how, but the why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about the low-lying fruit in your practice, those straightforward crowding and spacing cases your patients are asking about. With proper training, you could confidently treat these whilst referring out the complex ones. A dentist recently told me they were referring out 150 cases a year, nearly $1.2 million in treatment they could have partially retained while maintaining continuity of care. The impact extends far beyond just treating more cases. When you truly master diagnosis and biomechanics, you start seeing dentistry differently. Orthodontics becomes your minimal-intervention precursor to cosmetic cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m constantly amazed at how many brilliant dentists had their confidence in orthodontics destroyed by overly complicated teaching methods. Remember those wire-bending exercises in dental school? When was the last time you saw an orthodontist bend complex wire loops? The reality is that orthodontics isn\u2019t about memorising protocols. It\u2019s about learning fundamental concepts and applying them logically. After teaching orthodontics for over two decades, I can tell you this: ANYONE can learn orthodontics if they\u2019re taught the right way. With solid foundations, general dentists can confidently treat many orthodontic cases while knowing exactly when specialist care is truly needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For too long, we\u2019ve accepted these limitations that don\u2019t serve our patients or our profession. The future of dentistry lies in breaking down these boundaries whilst maintaining high standards of care. Whether you\u2019re managing simple alignment cases or diving deeper into comprehensive orthodontics, success comes from mastering core fundamentals rather than following recipes.
