By Kerryn Ramsey<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As the effects of climate change become more obvious and frequent, industry sectors including the dental profession are moving to reduce their impact. Integrating sustainability into a dental practice is an effective way to protect the environment, reduce carbon emissions and show commitment to the local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe can clearly see the world is becoming increasingly volatile,\u201d says Adelaide dentist <a href=\"https:\/\/jasperlee.info\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Jasper Lee<\/a>, who is passionate about promoting renewables, adopting sustainable dentistry practices and working towards a low-carbon, zero-waste future. \u201cWe have badly under-appreciated how much needs to go right for human civilisation to flourish. My focus is on the things we can do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his fight against climate change, Dr Lee was the chair of the ADA SA Environmental &amp; Sustainability Committee and was on the advisory working group with the Federal ADA. He helped co-author the <a href=\"http:\/\/ada.org.au\/resources\/sustainable-dentistry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ADA\u2019s Sustainability Guide<\/a> that covers travel, equipment and supplies, energy, waste, biodiversity and green space, and measuring and imbedding sustainability. It\u2019s available to all ADA members. He regularly speaks at conferences on how dentists can reduce emissions and provide quality sustainable healthcare. This is a man with a mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-committed-to-change\">Committed to change<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Lee was a software architect before he decided to retrain as a dentist in 2015, moving from Sydney to Adelaide. Sustainability wasn\u2019t on his radar while living in Sydney but his outlook changed in the smaller city. Simple things such as home solar panels and garden composting were common. He found that other students, neighbours and friends were thinking deliberately about how to live more sustainability. It piqued his interest, and he started looking at energy usage in regard to housing and vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI began to understand the impacts of climate change and emissions we produce,\u201d he says. \u201cI pursued my dental degree at the University of Adelaide and started looking at what role the profession has in sustainable healthcare. When I raised questions about sustainable dentistry during my studies, I didn\u2019t receive satisfying answers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy wife works in philanthropy with an emphasis on international development, and we were in New York attending the UN General Assembly when Greta Thunberg spoke in 2019. It made me realise that individual people need to make a difference in their own sphere of influence. As a new graduating dentist, this was something I committed myself to undertake.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-getting-involved\">Getting involved<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in Adelaide, Dr Lee joined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parentsforclimate.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parents for Climate<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;q=Parents+for+Climate&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a>where he met Dr Corinne Ang, a dentist working at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gentledentistry.com.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gentle Dentistry <\/a>in Erindale. These like-minded dentists soon recognised a role for the profession in tackling climate change.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Eliminate paper waste by becoming a digital practice, use compostable rinse cups, dispense fluoride into glass dappen dishes, autoclave instruments only when the steriliser is full, reduce the number of appointments for patients\u2014it all helps. <br><br><strong>Dr Corinne Ang, Gentle Dentistry<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, Drs Lee and Ang approached the ADA SA branch about this issue. \u201cThey encouraged us to start a committee to investigate best practice and see what that might look like for the profession,\u201d says Dr Lee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Corinne Ang continues: \u201cWe had a total of nine dentists on board and initially we were focused on gathering information then communicating and educating ADA members on various aspects of sustainability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The committee covered everything from energy usage to the physical structure of buildings to the best use of equipment. They looked at how to reduce patient travel and optimise treatments. They also looked at frequency of ordering and supply, and the distance consumables must travel. It was a wholistic investigation of a dental practice\u2019s carbon footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Dr Lee was invited to join the federal branch of the ADA in order to create the Sustainability Guide, Dr Ang took over as chair. \u201cIn 2022, I started <a href=\"https:\/\/aafcs.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Asian Australians for Climate Solutions<\/a> with a goal to change behaviours,\u201d she says. \u201cExtreme weather events are already happening in India and South Asia, and the concern in the community is clear. We want to raise awareness and normalise climate solutions. Being pro-climate solutions is not just a feel-good thing; you\u2019re helping the environment while lowering your cost of living.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-financial-sense\">Financial sense<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A common misconception is that adopting sustainable practices in a dental clinic means the bottom line takes a hit. The reality is that going green will save money and improve workflow. While there can be some initial expenses during set-up, the long-term financial situation is dramatically improved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Lee explains that going solar offers a huge financial advantage. \u201cDental practices generally operate from 8am to 5.30pm, which is peak solar generating time. Solar panels can accommodate 80 per cent of loads across all seasons. It\u2019s a great return on investment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supplies and procurement can be streamlined to cut waste and cost within the practice at the same time. Some of the areas to explore include instigating a variety of composite systems, using consumables before going out of date and including regular stocktakes of the practice stores.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking charge of your inventory offers a huge financial improvement, as it\u2019s possible for one practice to have thousands of dollars of stock on their shelves that is out of date. By looking three or four weeks in advance and bulk ordering, the amount of travel and emissions for consumables is minimised, wastage is reduced, and workflows are improved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>We have badly under-appreciated how much needs to go right for human civilisation to flourish. Climate change is a threat amplifier that makes conditions increasingly difficult for humanity to maintain our current standard of living. <br><br><strong>Dr Jasper Lee, dentist\/climate advocate<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we talk about sustainability in dentistry, we\u2019re actually talking about better workflows,\u201d says Dr Ang. \u201cBetter stock management means we don\u2019t end up hoarding expired goods destined for landfill. A considered use of products can have a great cumulative effect. We need single-use gloves but we don\u2019t need to use five pairs for the same patient.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The long-term financial benefits of adopting sustainable practices are clear. \u201cI can confidently say when a practice adopts sustainable measures, it will have a positive impact on their bottom line,\u201d says Dr Lee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-keeping-it-sterile\">Keeping it sterile<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another concern is whether sustainability measures go hand in hand with a sterile practice\u2014and even Dr Lee admits there\u2019s still a fair amount of work to do there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe medical profession has moved a lot faster than the dental profession in setting up specialised recycling streams for medical waste,\u201d he says. \u201cThis is due to the scale of waste they generate. The dental profession still has a long way to go in that regard. I\u2019ve sent some dental plastics for testing and, unfortunately, they aren\u2019t recyclable with the current soft plastics set-ups. I\u2019d like to see us migrate best practice from the hospital system and see if some of those particular products can be used for dental supplies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While these types of improvements are a work in progress, it should be remembered that small changes can have a big impact over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery little bit helps,\u201d says Dr Ang. \u201cEliminate paper waste by becoming a digital practice, use compostable rinse cups, dispense fluoride into glass dappen dishes, autoclave instruments only when the steriliser is full, reduce the number of appointments for patients\u2014it all helps.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sustainability is valued by the broad community and is frequently sought out. Adopting sustainable practices can drive more clients to your business which, once again, helps the bottom line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople are becoming more aware of the issues at hand, whether it be microplastics, climate change or energy usage,\u201d says Dr Lee. \u201cAs general awareness and community expectations increase, it\u2019s desirable for dental practices to meet those expectations, expand on them and, as a bonus, improve their bottom line.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As climate change continues to affect the environment, Dr Jasper Lee is dedicated to making the dental profession more sustainable.
