Children can have baby teeth up to 10 or 12 years old,\u201d co-author Dr Elizabeth Wenden said.<\/p><div class=\"bitem-article-desktop-720x300-in-text\" id=\"bitem-3379833295\"><!-- Bite 720x300 [async] -->\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\">if (!window.AdButler){(function(){var s = document.createElement(\"script\"); s.async = true; s.type = \"text\/javascript\";s.src = 'https:\/\/servedby.engagemedia.com.au\/app.js';var n = document.getElementsByTagName(\"script\")[0]; n.parentNode.insertBefore(s, n);}());}<\/script>\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\">\r\nvar AdButler = AdButler || {}; AdButler.ads = AdButler.ads || [];\r\nvar abkw = window.abkw || '';\r\nvar plc705185 = window.plc705185 || 0;\r\ndocument.write('<'+'div id=\"placement_705185_'+plc705185+'\"><\\\/'+'div>');\r\nAdButler.ads.push({handler: function(opt){ AdButler.register(165450, 705185, [720,300], 'placement_705185_'+opt.place, opt); }, opt: { place: plc705185++, keywords: abkw, domain: 'servedby.engagemedia.com.au', click:'CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER' }});\r\n<\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, decay in baby teeth can also spread to the permanent teeth impacting dental health and general health into adulthood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While access to dental health care professionals was an ongoing issue for people in rural and regional WA, the research\u2014published in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/cch.70095\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/cch.70095\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Child: Care, Health and Development<\/a><\/em>\u2014found that inconsistent messages on oral health and hygiene, as well as dietary sugars were the biggest hinderance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the research participants in the study identified soft drinks and sugar free soft drinks as not being tooth safe, however the cavity risks of dried fruit or fruit yogurt in pouches was flagged by less than half the study participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Confusion around oral hygiene practices was also evident, with only 26 per cent of participants reporting that they brushed their children\u2019s teeth twice daily (as recommended), and 70 per cent of participants reporting that they never flossed their children\u2019s teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFlossing is almost unheard of for young children, when in fact recommendations suggest it is good practice once there are two teeth touching,\u201d Dr Wallace said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Wenden noted that the earlier healthy oral hygiene habits are introduced, the better .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Wallace added it was important for parents and caregivers to&nbsp;stay informed&nbsp;on the best way to look after their children\u2019s teeth, and to make use of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com\/ls\/click?upn=u001.9njgggUPN7bXXtAzwmBIsVAbe-2BDd0J147htocl-2FuPEjZxYbPiAneI0MU46DFTtPnCuBnTm-2F9p8blJvaF-2FhqBPg-3D-3DJeHq_rW93P7M-2BrCeoZoDjLiqyOa0Qqa8GxDikD-2B7-2BxDYt3xY1x-2F95fx2UPNYFmHMEf6A2-2FzSyZIeoAW-2B1VRCoW01VVXZ-2BuvrJhf3wEgZeH17gqqwnzBKlajUmS2Bs1S9uiNROv27jQ3u7trG43Zm0TsraPLvazJYXD6obZg-2B7aLgXdvc24vho6eGT1xf2R138ECtPgOGjnan5FyGY-2FN978AYOV4r9O8W33fL1Zq42VBzWvrAdjFPRx7Vi41g6Y9jYmZ-2FPYrMQY8G9IwnW3zpiWCGr-2BEW0rGk4ahw4EcvqdB2HmoWJ-2Fv74H3FSaTadW9-2B6M4fX3I7cecSWQ8yaQNePIIU7VGsgx63Izf-2F1Ec4w5ug50K6NTUwPELdNNaMCA93gBY6t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">available government incentives<\/a>&nbsp;targeted at early childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know that poverty, education level and English as a first language are all determinants that can impact how caregivers and parents manage their child\u2019s oral health.
