The success of dental implant healing relies on bone tissue connecting with the surface of the implant (osseointegration).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Osseointegration is dependent on tiny living cells that maintain the bone matrix known as osteocyte lacunae. The arrangement of these cells allows the bone to adapt and remodel to dental implants.<\/p><div class=\"bitem-article-desktop-720x300-in-text\" id=\"bitem-154413529\"><!-- Bite 720x300 [async] -->\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\">if (!window.AdButler){(function(){var s = document.createElement(\"script\"); s.async = true; s.type = \"text\/javascript\";s.src = 'https:\/\/servedby.engagemedia.com.au\/app.js';var n = document.getElementsByTagName(\"script\")[0]; n.parentNode.insertBefore(s, n);}());}<\/script>\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\">\r\nvar AdButler = AdButler || {}; AdButler.ads = AdButler.ads || [];\r\nvar abkw = window.abkw || '';\r\nvar plc705185 = window.plc705185 || 0;\r\ndocument.write('<'+'div id=\"placement_705185_'+plc705185+'\"><\\\/'+'div>');\r\nAdButler.ads.push({handler: function(opt){ AdButler.register(165450, 705185, [720,300], 'placement_705185_'+opt.place, opt); }, opt: { place: plc705185++, keywords: abkw, domain: 'servedby.engagemedia.com.au', click:'CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER' }});\r\n<\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The team used the micro-computed tomography beamline to generate high-resolution 3D images that revealed the structure of osteocyte lacunae around implants in animal bone tissue during the osseointegration process. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe MCT beamline can produce high resolution, three-dimensional images in micron size to visualise small things like osteocyte lacunae,\u201d MCT beamline scientist Dr Benedicta Arhatari said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt allowed researchers to see the healing between bone and the implant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Implant samples in animals were exposed to synchrotron X-rays and rotated to collect projection data from multiple angles. The data from the MCT beamline was then reconstructed into 3D images using advanced software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MCT beamline is also able to produce phase contrast imaging. Phase contrast captures subtle variations in X-ray bending as they pass through a sample. This is very useful to visualise internal structures with low density like osteocyte lacunae.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In labs, it may take 12 to 13 hours to get these types of 3D images but, \u201cthe MCT beamline is able to produce these high-resolution images in just 10 minutes due to the brightness of the synchrotron beam\u201d, Dr Arhatari said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By understanding the role of osteocyte lacunae in the healing process, scientists can improve the design of implant surfaces and materials.
