The experts agree it\u2019s all a matter of timing and taking care of the details. By Josh Jennings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking on more staff, more chairs, and even more dental practices sounds like a lucrative business move. In theory. In practice, however, there\u2019s a whole range of factors to consider. Growth can bring increased revenue, but it also introduces new complexities in logistics, leadership, and patient care expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dentists who are planning to scale up need to know they have the time, mental bandwidth, business acumen and, most importantly, the right kind of practice that is ready for expansion.<\/p><div class=\"bitem-article-desktop-720x300-in-text\" id=\"bitem-1891532817\"><!-- Bite 720x300 [async] -->\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\">if (!window.AdButler){(function(){var s = document.createElement(\"script\"); s.async = true; s.type = \"text\/javascript\";s.src = 'https:\/\/servedby.engagemedia.com.au\/app.js';var n = document.getElementsByTagName(\"script\")[0]; n.parentNode.insertBefore(s, n);}());}<\/script>\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\">\r\nvar AdButler = AdButler || {}; AdButler.ads = AdButler.ads || [];\r\nvar abkw = window.abkw || '';\r\nvar plc705185 = window.plc705185 || 0;\r\ndocument.write('<'+'div id=\"placement_705185_'+plc705185+'\"><\\\/'+'div>');\r\nAdButler.ads.push({handler: function(opt){ AdButler.register(165450, 705185, [720,300], 'placement_705185_'+opt.place, opt); }, opt: { place: plc705185++, keywords: abkw, domain: 'servedby.engagemedia.com.au', click:'CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER' }});\r\n<\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask anyone who has experienced business growth, and they\u2019ll warn that not all practices are ready for expansion\u2014and just recognising that lack of readiness is paramount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrew Gray, business development manager at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.primepractice.com.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prime Practice<\/a>, cautions that not every dentist who takes on practice expansion is ready. \u201cA lot of people don\u2019t achieve their optimum or maximum in their existing practice before they decide to jump to another practice,\u201d he says. \u201cSo there are rivers of gold to be made in the existing practice, and just having another practice doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re going to make any more money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, prematurely expanding without operational efficiency or strong patient retention can stretch resources too thin and jeopardise both sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dental surgeon Dr Paul Hwin, owner of multiple thriving dental practices including Melbourne\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapphiredentistry.com.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Sapphire Dentistry<\/a>, says dentists who have spent time developing their clinics might believe practice ownership and expansion as a logical next step, but it isn\u2019t the right step for every dentist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBusiness ownership is sacrifice,\u201d says Dr Hwin. \u201cIt takes a level of determination and commitment that goes beyond what regular clinical dentistry requires of you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also requires a major investment of not just time and money, but also energy into practice leadership, team development, and the ongoing demands of entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your practice does appear to have strong potential to expand, there\u2019s work to be done first to get it ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That includes assessing everything from finances and culture to your capacity to manage from a broader business perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Vandana Budhwar, a dental reconstructive and implant surgeon, owns three practices and two general anaesthetic facilities in Ballarat, Victoria. Along the way, she admits she had to change her focus and switch mindsets from self-employed practice owner to business owner with a long-term growth strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019s also centralised business operations across practice postcodes, syncing clinical protocols, HR platforms and more to the cloud. This shift has enabled greater efficiency and consistency across locations while freeing up time to focus on strategy and leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, she\u2019s focused on recruitment, culture and retention, offering partnership equity to dentists, along with autonomy, mentorship, cultural days, retreats, and CPD events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>You need to have your cashflow and your debt ratio very much solid. Without people, you can\u2019t grow. <br><br><strong>Dr Vandana Budhwar, multiple practice owner<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Budhwar says there are certain non-negotiables in getting ready for practice expansion. \u201cYou need to have your cashflow and your debt ratio very much solid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou also need to have your talent pipeline. If you don\u2019t have enough dentists and you don\u2019t have enough support staff, you\u2019re not going to be able to scale. Without people, you can\u2019t grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd you need to have that vision: \u2018I\u2019m no longer going there just to see patients; I have a purpose.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Paul Hwin was about two years out of dental school at the University of Melbourne when the opportunity to buy his uncle\u2019s dental practice came up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His Sapphire Dentistry practice has evolved from one chair to multiple chairs, and one dentist to an entire team of dentists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This transformation took years of incremental improvements, staff development, and ongoing financial reinvestment. According to Dr Hwin, dentists need a level of business understanding to take on a practice. This extends to operational matters, HR, and accounting responsibilities, including turnover, profit, and cashflow. \u201cOnce you have a finger on the pulse, you can tweak and manage things as you go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Hwin says he was responsible for 100 per cent of the billings when he bought his first practice. Now, he\u2019s transferred that responsibility, so he can focus on business, strategy, and dentist training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says practice owners need to surround themselves with a strong team. \u201cOf course there are the associate dentists, dental assistants, receptionists, and practice managers, but it also extends outside to include family, business mentors and partners. You need trusted people to bounce ideas off, to guide decisions, and to help you stay balanced when challenges arise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He adds, \u201cBusiness ownership can take a toll, so you\u2019ve got all that to manage on top of everything else you need to do in the practice. Having a strong support network is key to both wellbeing and success.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Dr Budhwar\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/smilestudioballarat.com.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Smile Studio in Ballarat<\/a>, some anxious patients have travelled more than eight hours to receive treatment. Her practice has developed into a destination that appeals to some under-served patients who have avoided the dentist for years.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, it\u2019s renowned for providing sensitive full-mouth rehabilitation and medically complex treatment for neurodivergent individuals, those who have experienced trauma, and people with other health issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt became clear that we were starting to solve a problem that other clinics weren\u2019t able to solve,\u201d Dr Budhwar says of her Ballarat practice\u2019s growth. \u201cSo it was time to move from the second to the third location.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The signs it\u2019s time for a practice to expand are easy to recognise, she adds. \u201cYou are booked out in advance and patients are waiting. You\u2019ve got team members who are craving more responsibility, so you need to start creating a business that gives them the ability to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think that the biggest sign is that you\u2019ve got systems that don\u2019t collapse.
