intraoral scanner

I’d had my previous scanner for around five years but it was getting a bit old and clunky. It also had a subscription fee attached to it. I needed something fast, accurate and reliable, so I upgraded to the Medit i900.

What’s good about it

This is the latest version of the Medit scanners which utilises AI so it’s faster to pick up data. It comes with a laptop loaded with the appropriate software and there’s no subscription or download fees.

The handpiece is small, lightweight and easy to ensure full coverage in the mouth. It comes with two medium and two large heads that attach to the handpiece. There’s a small one available as well for use with children. I’ve noticed I get really good results with the medium head in full-grown men when scanning, particularly behind the upper sevens. That was a tricky spot in the past.

The quality of the results is excellent. Everything is clear and the results are produced quickly. The handpiece is attached by a cord to the unit as that’s my preference. I don’t like products connected wirelessly or by Bluetooth as I find they invariably have issues. I’m old-school in that regard.

We’ve only owned the i900 for a couple of weeks so I’m still exploring all the options and various functions. This means there’s a learning curve to get full value out of the unit.

What’s not so good

When you’re scanning, the unit plays music to let you know it’s being done correctly. If you’re doing it wrong, the music stops. This can be distracting. While there is an option to turn it off, it would be better if it was standard to have the music off and optional to turn it on. Some of my staff have also noticed it can be a bit slow to upload onto the Medit cloud system.
