air abrasion unit

by Dr Mitesh Vasant, Beyond Dental Care, Sandstone Point, QLD

The RONDOflex Plus is an air-abrasion unit that adds water spray technology to its use.

What’s good about it

The addition of water to air abrasion makes it a much less messy procedure. It also washes away all the powder, making the end result look good when taking before-and-after photos.

I use it for abrasion as I have another instrument for cleaning. For direct restorations, I use it to prepare the surface after I have caries freed. I use it to clean away plaque so I can get a better bond. It also helps roughen tertiary dentine, which helps bonding to it.

I’ve had this unit since 2019 and with regular maintenance, it’s been very reliable. We had issues initially with clogs in the tips. We soon realised the problem and set up an effective and regular maintenance schedule. We’ve had virtually no problems other than worn-out O-rings.

The RONDOflex does a fantastic job and helps keep things neat. Other brands might do a good job but they’re incredibly messy.

I’ve used brands where I’ve had to close my eyes when I turn it on to keep the powder out.

I work part-time but use the RONDOflex every day I’m working. The other dentists in our practice use it daily. It’s been a great unit for us.

What’s not so good

Compared to other brands of air-abrasion units, it’s a more expensive option. The tips get sterilised and are replaceable but a new one costs as much as some of the cheaper abrasion units. You really need to remember where you put them down.

Where did you get it
