Australian software company Eyes of AI has received government financial backing to turn a painful, slow check for periodontitis into a fast, contactless scan and put Australia at the centre of dental innovation.
When dentists check for periodontitis, they still rely on old and painful methods, tooth-by- tooth assessment. It is uncomfortable, time consuming, and easy to miss the early warning signs.
Sydney-based Medtech company Eyes of AI believes there is a better way: a contactless screening method that combines patient X-rays, images and data delivering results in seconds through the power of artificial intelligence.
Now the company has won national backing to prove it. Under the Australian Government’s Cooperative Research Centres Projects (CRC-P) Round 17 program, Eyes of AI—the sole dental project funded in Round 17—will lead a $6.7m dollar initiative, working with CSIRO’s Data61, the University of Sydney, and global industry partners.
Perio Detect aims to create what the team describes as the world’s first multi-modal AI-powered periodontal screening tool. Instead of manual probing, clinicians would capture routine imaging and data and let Eyes of AI’s models perform the heavy lifting—segmenting anatomy, detecting pathology, and returning a structured assessment in seconds. The promise is speed, comfort, and consistency, with objective results that can be tracked over time.
“This CRC-P selection is a major milestone for Eyes of AI and for dental innovation globally,” Eyes of AI CEO Khoa Le said.
