It took me a long time to decide to purchase this microscope which I regret because it’s such a wonderful tool. I originally bought it because I wanted to have better visibility when doing endodontics and minimally invasive dentistry, but it can do so much more.
What’s good about it
It has a lighting feature that differentiates between different types of materials. It allows you to perform minimally invasive dentistry because fluorescence mode shows the difference between hard tissue and existing composite. When removing existing restorations, it clearly differentiates tooth structure from restorative material.
Visibility is greatly improved, which reduces treatment time. All images under the microscope can be captured digitally which improves communication with patients. Rather than explaining what I’m seeing, I let them see for themselves. All images are then transferred and saved to our files.
My surgery space is limited. I was impressed by the way the Zeiss salespeople and technicians measured and installed the microscope. I had to sacrifice an overhead light so it could be attached to the ceiling. It took a bit of time to get used to, but I have enough space to install another overhead light if I decide I need it.
Practising with the microscope has improved my operating posture. I’m no longer going home with back pain and it has increased the lifespan of my career.
What’s not so good
It’s not really a negative but you have to put in the time to learn how to use it properly. Then you must make sure you’re using it. If it’s just sitting there except for root canals, then it’s being completely underutilised. Completing a hands-on course is essential.
