The autoclave or steam steriliser is an essential part of any modern dental practice. It’s like the ‘engine room’ of the practice, handling instrument reprocessing to ensure infection control safeguards are followed reliably and repeatedly.

In 2023, following extensive evaluation and ‘road testing’ in Australian dental practices, A-dec partnered with Dürr Dental to introduce the revolutionary Dürr Hygoclave to the Australian market.

Already proven as a superior performer in Europe, the Hygoclave is renowned for its fast and effective B-class cycles, ease of use and reliability, with advanced features and benefits not found in other autoclaves.

The Hygoclave can process instruments in as little as 30 minutes, including drying, using the 134°C B Flash cycle with minimal water and power use – illustrating its efficiency, environmental benefits and lower running costs.

The Dürr Hygoclave has proven a quiet achiever in Australia with many dental clinics now switching to Hygoclave to improve their infection control throughput and enhance traceability protocols.

On the recommendation of Melbourne equipment dealer Alldent, thriving Melbourne practice Sunshine Family Dental added a second autoclave in 2024 to help keep up with its instrument processing demands.

The new Dürr Hygoclave 50 Plus autoclave has greatly boosted throughput in the practice and has become favoured by staff for its ease of use and improved capacity.

Sunshine Family Dental Principal Dentist Dr Nhi Truong said the practice was very happy with the Hygoclave 50 Plus which had already performed over 2000 cycles within just a few short months of being installed and has done many more since!

Dr Truong said one of the useful features compared to their other autoclave was the shape of the tray racks in the Hygoclave 50 Plus 22L chamber which accommodates longer pouches without the need for folding.

The steri room staff have also noted that the Hygoclave is very quiet in operation and emits noticeably less heat outside the unit than their existing steriliser.

Dr Truong said the intuitive colour icons made the autoclave very easy for staff to use at just the push of a button. The Hygoclave features the added confidence of a secure powered locking door and fully automated traceability of each cycle – with the data stored on the Hygoclave and automatically backed up to the user’s PC.

The Hygoclave Plus models also include free access to Dürr’s advanced VistaSoft Monitor software which actively monitors machine performance to provide alert messages and useful updates on routine maintenance.

“The Hygoclave notifies us of any issue, like when the door requires lubrication. We’ve had no problems with it, none of the cycles have ever failed and it is constantly being used,” Dr Truong said.

The Hygoclave is available and supported by A-dec dealers in Australia who also offer installation, training and steriliser validation.
